Provisional Human is an exhibition and research project developed through Provisional Art Lab, an art-and-technology research lab established at Hongik University College of Fine Arts. Jung Seung is the founder and lead artist of the lab, guiding its project direction and working with participating artists on experiments that examine the relationship between artists and artificial intelligence across virtual and physical exhibition spaces.
The project looks at how artists are responding to AI, what they imagine and become preoccupied with when working alongside it, and how the role of an exhibition may change under these conditions. Based on the works, language, and ideas of participating artists, a series of metahuman artists were created and placed within a shared virtual exhibition environment.
Each metahuman occupies its own space and is connected to generative AI, allowing visitors to engage in real-time conversation. Visitors can ask questions about the work, the artist’s ideas, or the larger theme of the exhibition. Through these exchanges, the audience takes a more active role in how the exhibition is experienced and interpreted.
The virtual artists communicate through image, sound, text, video, and conversation. In the physical exhibition, these virtual entities are connected to moving images, voice interaction, digital systems, and physical installations, bringing AI-based characters into a shared space with the audience.
Provisional Art Lab develops projects using generative AI, metahumans, real-time data, robotics, and sensors, moving between virtual AI environments and physical AI systems. Provisional Human is part of this ongoing research into how artists, artificial intelligence, and audiences may begin to share the same creative environment.
임시휴먼은 홍익대학교 미술대학에 설립된 아트앤테크 연구실, '임시랩(Provisional Art Lab)'을 기반으로 진행된 전시이자 연구 프로젝트이다. 정승은 임시랩의 founder이자 lead artist로서 랩의 프로젝트 방향을 설정하고, 참여 작가들과 함께 인공지능과 예술가의 관계를 가상 공간과 실제 전시 공간에서 실험해왔다.
프로젝트는 아티스트가 인공지능을 어떻게 받아들이고 있는지, 인공지능과 함께 작업하는 과정에서 무엇을 상상하고 어디에 관심을 두는지, 그리고 이러한 변화 속에서 전시는 어떤 역할을 할 수 있는지를 살펴본다. 참여 작가들의 작업과 언어, 생각을 바탕으로 각각의 메타휴먼 아티스트를 만들고, 이들을 하나의 가상 전시 공간 안에 배치하였다.
각 메타휴먼 아티스트는 독립된 공간을 가지고 있으며, 생성형 AI와 연결되어 관객과 실시간으로 대화한다. 관객은 화면 속 캐릭터에게 직접 질문을 던지고, 작품이나 작가의 생각, 전시의 주제에 대해 대화를 이어갈 수 있다. 이 과정에서 관객은 작품을 보는 사람에 머물지 않고, 인공지능과의 대화를 통해 전시의 내용에 직접 개입하게 된다.
가상 공간 안의 메타휴먼은 시각과 소리, 텍스트, 영상 등 서로 다른 방식으로 작가의 관심과 세계관을 드러낸다. 실제 전시장에서는 이러한 가상 존재와 연결되는 영상, 음성 인터랙션, 디지털 장치와 물리적 설치가 함께 구성되며, 가상 환경의 인공지능이 현실 공간 안으로 들어오는 상황을 만든다.
임시랩은 생성형 AI, 메타휴먼, 실시간 데이터, 로봇, 센서 등을 활용해 가상환경의 인공지능에서 현실 공간의 피지컬 AI까지 다양한 프로젝트를 진행하고 있다. 임시휴먼은 그 과정에서 인공지능을 하나의 도구로 사용하는 문제를 넘어, 인간과 인공지능이 같은 창작 환경 안에서 어떤 관계를 만들 수 있는지를 살펴보는 프로젝트이다.
