Machine Poetics
Ivre des mots takes the form of an analogue kinetic information board once commonly used in railway stations and connects it to generative AI. In its first version, GPT generates new poems inspired by Arthur Rimbaud’s Le Bateau ivre, which are periodically displayed through the moving text panel. Language produced in a digital system is given a physical presence through the mechanical movement of the work.
The project was later expanded at Hogye Station in Ulsan around the theme of labor. Keywords drawn from the history and social context of the area were used to generate new texts and moving images. In a former railway environment closely connected to labor and movement, these generated sentences bring local memory into contact with contemporary technological systems. The kinetic panel, 3D-printed structure, AI-generated text and video, and audience responses together form a system whose content continues to change.
Here, language is not simply used to communicate a fixed meaning. Speech, memory, predefined themes, and generative AI take part in the continuous production and transformation of words and images. The work examines how humans and machines can participate together in the formation of memory and meaning, extending Jung Seung’s interest in artificial life into a non-material structure built through language.
Within the Life Architect Project, Ivre des mots marks a point where the activity of artificial entities expands from movement and physical interaction into language. Externalized memory is combined with generative AI to produce new sentences and narratives, creating a different form of relationship between human and machine.
